The purpose of the Astronomical Society is to promote an interesting, scientific hobby among students. It helps boost their interest in the universe, space exploration and latest technology, simultaneously grooming them to play one’s part properly as a team member. By doing so the Society aims to give the students the opportunity to enter the world of science, build new targets and achieve them. The club improves their presentation skills, while discussions encompassing the past, present and the future of science help awaken their imagination and creativity.

The interact club of Hillwood college was charted in the year 1991, hence celebrating thirty-two years of prestige and excellence under the Interact District 3220. It is sponsored by the Rotary club of Kandy. The club holds a proud history of achievements at both club and district level, having been awarded with many citations throughout its glorious history whilst maintaining high ideals, qualities and remarkable standards. We as a club strive to aid individuals in discovering a new side of themselves by organizing projects which benefit the club, school and society to achieve our purpose and goal of being the “Utmost for the highest in service above self.”

English Literary Association of Hillwood College has its pride of being one of the pioneers and for initiating one of the first co-curricular club within the college. Fondly named as “E.L.A”, this club has contributed immensely creating a platform to showcase the talents of the students since its inception. It always takes the forefront in uplifting the English literary standards within the student population of the College. They showcase their talents at all the school events, Sports meet, Prize giving and public shows. The English Literary Association has initiated projects such as Literary Marathon with Trinity College, Creative writing workshop with:” Chokalate “magazine, and dubbing. New avenues have been discovered such as International School Awards with British Council where nine projects were collaborated with schools overseas, Gavel Club affiliated to Toastmasters International and United Nations Club with Vishaka and D.S. Senanayake College Colombo.

Hillwood College Gavel Club affiliated to “Toastmasters International” started in 2016 with the program “Unleash yourself “organized by the gavel club of University of Kelaniya. Since then, the young Gaveliers have been climbing the ladder with quality and quantity winning many all-island awards.
The club members are groomed through many activities making room to enjoy talking effectively and meaningfully.
All believe that public speaking allows the youngsters to form connections, influence decisions and motivate change without communication skills the ability to progress in the working world and in life itself would be nearly impossible.
The gavel club has its regular meetings on 3rdThursday in the school premises.

Debate Circle is popular among the social and political enthusiasts, who wish to develop their skills and knowledge on specific global and domestic issues. Debaters develop a sense of confidence about the world and a sense of empowerment as they learn to express their thoughts and concerns. Help build an identity for individuals. Every year the Circle organizes their inter-house debate competitions, inter-school competitions, and take part in the competitions organized by the surrounding schools.

Science is the vision through which we can get a better insight into life. Through this club we offer the students a chance to unlock their thoughts more freely with the invaluable words of wisdom of the teachers who pave way to launch new creations and inspirational events.

Founded in 2014 with the vision to bring forth students with managerial skills to empower national development. The society’s main purposes are to train and equip young individuals with managerial skills to face the competitive global job market successfully and to lay the foundation to build strong personalities.

“A perfect arena to explore the most beautiful language that helps us to read the marvelous stories of nature.”

The prime purpose of Nature Exploration and Conservation Society is to give the members an opportunity to enjoy and discover Mother Nature. Visiting places of eco-diversity monthly and exploring the wonders of nature, the fauna and flora unique to this island, weekly lectures on environment, annual hiking competitions & first-aid demonstrations are on the agenda for these enthused youngsters.

In an ICT based society the ICT club of Hillwood College sought to provide an outstanding avenue for students to explore numerous benefits of ICT. Our goal is to equip students with the tools they need to become more adept ICT users in today’s environment and develop computer-based skills in the field of Ardino and Python programming. Since its inception continues to develop and embrace new experiences just as technology and communication develop more by the day.

The media club of Hillwood College, named as the “ARKYA Media Unit” basically focuses on enhancing talents of students in videography and announcing. Further it has expanded its horizons in avenues such as photography and dubbing.
The main objective of the club is to provide a forum for the students to voice forth their opinion, views and perspectives by producing much needed journalistic excellence for the future world.

Within the cornerstone of Mother Hillwood are embedded true Christian values that have been passed on since its earliest days of inception. Formally known as the Student Christian Movement (SCM), this special movement plays a main role in instilling a spiritual growth in students, through biblical study and prayer. A deep thirst for God and ensures the wellbeing of Christian students while reaching out to the wider community within the school vicinity. The committee which is annually appointed bears the responsibilities of overlooking the daily morning worship and services at the chapel while also hosting major Christian events of the school calendar like annual SCM get together, Easter Service, Carol Service and charity programs in the ethos of love.

“Music and choral ensemble” have conventionally been a deep-rooted part of Hillwood College’s eminent history of which the Chapel Choir bears a specialty. Apart from general musical appreciation, as an Anglican Missionary School, Christian worship has always played a central role in school life, the breakthrough of this being the building of the house of prayer in 1922, which offered students their own place of worship. Following under the nurture of many a significant mentor, the chapel choir stands as a vital outcome of SCM of rich tradition, gracing special events on the Christian calendar as well as important school occasions with their melodious vocals and always forbearing in mind, their pledge to give their “Utmost for the Highest.”

Initiated on the 2nd of March 1962, the Buddhist Society is one of the major societies due to its high membership. The purpose of the society is to bring about a wholesome young generation inculcated with good virtues.

Buddhist Society encourages ‘giving’ with their alms giving program and dansal organized throughout the year and during special occasions such as Vesak and Poson months. Being near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Malwathu-Asgiri Maha Vihara, members get the opportunity to take part in the religious programs organized by these places of worship.

Originated in the year 1991, Islamic Students’ Movement is the link between other institutions of Islamic faith. The annual Islamic Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm and grandeur with the participation of many schools in and around Kandy, where the members hold friendly competitions.

Photographic club basically contribute professionals in the field of photography to serve the college, gain knowledge theoretically and practically on the field while providing media coverage for all the important events in our school.

“Diplomacy in action, empowering global leaders.”

This club was established in 2016 and its aim is to recreate the vital diplomacy practiced within the United Nations.
It helps to create a community of future leaders who get the opportunity to voice their ideas and beliefs regarding local and international issues while developing their skills in leadership and diplomacy.
The annual conferences are held and the students representing their schools and the country, become delegates in discussing and finding solutions to international issues such as gender discrimination, global warming etc.

Young Inventors Club is a community of young and creative minds that aim to foster innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students.

Our club aims to provide a platform for individuals who are passionate about technology, engineering and science and interested in exploring new ideas and inventions. We organize various events, workshops, and competitions to encourage young inventors to develop their ideas and bring them to life.

Hillwood with a history of 126 years behind her, is an institution where the inheritance is discussed and celebrated creating a deep sense of belonging and patriotism in a child. Heritage Club is the base in this endeavor and members have their annual National Day celebrations, workshops, seminars, competitions, etc., with the participation of historians, archivists, university lecturers, etc., to re-live and celebrate our unique and rich Sri Lankan culture and traditions.

The hobby club which is called the “Aflatoun Club” is comprised of Grade 8 class students, aiming to cultivate and enhance entrepreneurial skills. This initiative provides valuable social and financial education, empowering children to create positive impact. Additionally, it serves as a platform to identify and nurture individual talents, guiding them towards self-sufficiency and independence in the future.

The Girl Guide Association of Hillwood College is registered under the Company ID 3rd Kandy in the Girl Guide Association of Sri Lanka. Main aim of the association is to help girls develop their mental, social, physical, and spiritual skills and become responsible citizens who contribute positively to the community. Girl Guides take part in camps, hikes, thinking day programs, quiz

competitions, etc., throughout the year. Guides who are awarded with President’s Guide Award are given extra points at the University entrance.

With the motto “In the Service of Humanity”, St. John Ambulance Brigade devote their time to provide First Aid for the injured and the sick with much ardor and care.

Throughout the recent years, this club has enlightened countless young minds in our school on the vast field of robotics and electronics. The students are exposed to many global professionals at the “Science on stage” program conducted by the European Union Countries.

Research is the base of the universe; its where novel knowledge is created out of sheer curiosity and interest. It is something that should be acknowledged, embraced, and followed, to steer the world closer to advancement.

Some consider music as the universal language in the world. This might be true until it comes to inanimate objects and deaf, but revealing or understanding the true language the universe is written of is the main objective of our society.

AESTHETICS

Through Sinhala drama club the students are given the opportunity to experience a multitude of positive outcomes which enable them to enhance their skills and cultivate an engaged and participatory learning environment and gain knowledge about various modes of drama and theatre.

English drama club is one of the most recently initiated clubs at Hillwood. This paves the way for the children to get the exposure in to different genre of drama and the opportunity to explore and gain knowledge in the field of drama and theatre.

The Western Music Unit strives to blend musical melodies and bring out the brilliant talent of the young ladies of Hillwood. The Unit handles the western brass band and the junior, intermediate and senior choirs that maintain a glorious reputation among other schools. The Unit possesses tremendous achievements from all-island choir competitions.

The college Dancing troupe represents the school with its traditional and modern rhythmic poise with impressive talents and skills that charm the spectacle under the guidance of well qualified and experienced teachers.

The Art Circle brings you together with a company of college artists who display remarkable abilities through their scintillating arts.

SPORTS

A sport is basically an activity that is done as pleasure and involves lot of physical activity. Sports play a major role in child’s physical wellbeing as well as mental stability. Thus, Hillwood College promotes Sports activities by allowing children to choose from a wide variety of sport instilled within school under the guidance of professional trainers.
